I know this is a Dell group, but there seems to be some very knowlegable
people here about other issuse. I have a small office network (4 PC's) and
was wondering if I should purchase a hardware based firewall. At this time,
I have cable internet service, and I'm using a $50.00 Linksys router. I have
looked at some hardware firewalls (Cisco, Sonicwall), but I didn't know if
there was any real benefit.

Here's my take on it. If you're just a casual 'net user, and you're
not running your own servers, there's no real reason to go beyond a
'consumer' grade firewall, such as that which is (probably) built into
the Linksys router you already have.

HOWEVER -- If you expect to start running your own servers, hosting
your own domains on your own DNS boxen, or if you have your own mail
and/or web servers that you need to administer remotely, via VPN, then
you need to look at a higher-end product than the Linksys.

Happy netting.
