Tom:
Another question.
Can I create my backup image on my external hard drive and still have other
files there on that same partition
(eg: have the image and then store some additional photos on that same
partition )
Assume my laptop hard drive is 30gb and the external hard drive partition is
60 gb.

True Image will allow you to create a bootable rescue CD. It will then
restore the image from your USB drive.

Mel,
Most good products allow you to boot off a CD or other device to start
the restore process. then you would specify the source being the
external backup, then the harddrive as the destination, etc.

I have a Dell Inspiron 2200.
So far I have been using Retrospect S-ware to back up to an external WD
drive. It works fine.
What I'd rather do, I think, is do an Image B/U.
From postings here, it sounds like maybe Acronis True Image would be the
way to go.
First question: would I be able to put the image on to my external hard
drive?
But, here is my other question:
Suppose I get an image B/U and my computer then craps out, say wrecking
the hard drive. The hard drive then gets replaced or I get a new laptop.
How do I go about restoring things? Assume the image is saved on my WD
external hard drive. How do I boot from it. Or do I even need to?
I guess I'm very confused on how to recover after a crash. From what
I've read, restoring from an image is quick and easy, but how do you do
it!
