Yes, try a different brand media. I have the same drive and it works
fine on Verbatim -R 16x and TDK +R 8x media. I bought some el cheapo
8x +R Staples media, and it only burns that at 4x.
FYI, the Philips 8701 and the BenQ 1640 are the same drive and you can
crossflash between the two.

This drive came preinstalled in a new base unit from Dell....
I have some Datawrite yellow media (8x) and the first disc I burned went
fine at 8x, but every successive disc is only burning at 4x - they`re
from the same spindle, so should be the same.
I`m burning images with DVD Decrypter, which reports the media as
supporting up to 8x burn speed, but set at "max" i`m only getting 4x out
of it - same happens setting the speed manually to 8x...
Any ideas ? (its got me foxed)
Could the drive / firmware be downrating this media based on the initial
burn ? ("adapting" the rate)
