I figure the thing is worth next to nowt now and there isn't much room to
upgrade the graphics and sound with only two PCI slots available.
Can you still get the upgrade option that had a skt 370 Celeron with a
adaptor to socket 1.

The powerleap is available in the UK but IMHO is far too expensive
here. Check whether you have a 100MHz FSB as this is the deciding
factor really. If you are moderately computer literate and you have
the 100MHz FSB, then a super slocket III coupled to a Coppermine (NOT
Tualatin) Celeron at up to 1.1GHz with a fan should cost no more that
about £25 if bought on e.g. eBay UK and gives a low cost boost. The
GX110 motherboard is also an option (again try the UK eBay), but note
this comes in two flavours. If you get the socket 370 version, no
problems, but the slot 1 version gets you back to where you started.
Note the GX110 has only two memory slots.....

See the forums at delltalk.us.dell.com and there's a discussion from a
couple of months ago about the G1 and successful upgrades. The G1 is
similar to the GX1. Watch out for the bios issue - later bioses
inhibited faster processors on some machine.

PS Make sure if you go this route that you get a motherboard with the
appropriate size riser for your case!!! From your description of the
machine's two PCI slots, you may only have one of the smaller cases.

There's two motherboard with LARGE risers available on eBay in the UK
currently with 800MHz P3 and memory for £11 BIN! - but note the G1
riser won't fit the GX110 board so they aren't really suitable for you.
