its beginning to look like it's not the drive, but something else internal, like the circuitry overheated.
assuming the unit is still on warranty, since you got dell to send you the drive, you may have to get them back on the phone and see what else they suggest, but you may have to send in your unit and get it fixed.
the motherboard or cpu may need to be replaced. i wouldnt do that in the field unless you are very seasoned.
you can easily buy a 2.5in to 40pin ide converter, for about $20 and mount each mobile drives on a regular computer and verify they are working and extract your data from there.
then you can safely send the unit to dell for service.
