I'll report on my friend's computer but it may be a week before I see him.

I don't see my situation as a problem. I've never rebooted with the USB
flash drive connected before. It was an accident.

that is interesting. so you have identified it to be an issue with a
particular hub used in conjunction with your particular flash drive...
the realistic answer is to get another hub or another flash drive or just
put a long cable for the flash drive to one of the ports on the system.
will be interesting to see what you figure out to be the issue with your
friends machine...
