You have to use the entire drive for the clone, whereas an image is
just one or more files that contain your backup.
This is true just for True Image. Other cloners, such as Ghost
and Casper XP, can clone a single partition and put it on a
drive that can contain other partitions already. Since Casper XP
does just cloning, it is easier to use for that purpose than Ghost.
If you want to try it out, you can download a 30-day free trial copy
from www.FSSdev.com/products/casperxp/ . I clone my entire
OS partition each week, and as a result, I not only backup all my
files, I also have a clone that is immediately bootable without
any "restore" procedure necessary.
As with any WinXP/NT/2K clone, disconnect the "parent"
drive before booting up the clone for the first time. After that
is done, the drives can be re-jumpered (or the BIOS can be
set so the clone drive is the boot drive) and the clone can
be booted with its "parent" visible to it without it getting
confused.
