Kevin, An update from AMS. I must say their email tech support has been
outstanding, unlike the support from Vantec you reported. Pat
"No file size limitation once you adjust the buffer rate to 2048MB. The
reason why DS3 is set to 1024MB is to make it more compatible to older hard
drive. USB is unlimited by default in design. Great to have a firewire
utility where you can tweak the settings to different environment. Have Fun!

Kevin, FYI, I emailed AMS tech support about this problem and got the
following reply. Apparently there is a 1-2GB per file limitation, at
least with the Oxford chipset. I would *assume* that would apply to other
chipsets too. Pat
"Thanks for contacting AMS Techsupport!
Venus DS3 (DS-2316CBK) USB+Firewire enclosure. Firewire Oxford 911 by
default buffer rate is set to 1024MB. When transferring a large file over
1GB or more. The unit will either disconnect or freeze up. A quick
solution
to solve by using the Oxford 911 utility to adjust the buffer rate to max
@
2048MB. This will help solve your 1394 being lost or any delayed write
failures. We highly recommend you use a good quality Firewire host
controller for best performance. VIA Firewire based chipset is the kind I
will stay away from.
Read PDF instruction and skip the first section and go to section 2. When
using this Oxford 911 utility. Only connect one DS3 Firewire device.

I'm referring to the chipset in the external case enclosure. I don't know
if your Oxford is NEC compatible or not.
Vantec is the brand of my enclosure. I have a WD SATA HD in the case but
I run it in USB mode. File transfer in SATA mode is twice as fast as USB
but because of the Delayed Write Failures in SATA mode it's not worth
using this mode.

Brian, thanks for the added information. Are you talking about the
chipset on the HD itself or the external enclosure it is mounted in or
the USB/FireWire port used? Since you mention Vantec, I assume it's the
external enclosure chipset.
In my case the HD chipset and/or controller is whatever WD uses on the
320GB JB drive. The external enclosure is an AMS Venus DS3 and uses the
Oxford 911 (Firewire) ATA-6 chipset, which I have read is very
compatible and one of the better out there. It also uses the Cypress
(USB 2.0) ATA-6 chipset, which was also supposed to be a good one.
My PCI USB 2.0 and Firewire card is an Adaptec Duo Connect with three
USB ports and two Firewire ports. The Adaptec has an internal power
connector to the PC power supply and is reported as being a Texas
Instruments IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers, with an NEC PCI to USB
Enhanced Host Controller.
I'm just plain old stubborn when things like this don't work like
they're supposed to and try to figure out a fix if I can. Thanks, Pat
.
