According to MS you can take control of his computer through "help
request" without configuring routers if the session is initiated through
windows messenger. Not quite as good as remote desktop, but he can watch
what you're doing while you guys talk on the phone (a feature not available
with remote desktop). Maybe he'll learn something and not have to call you
so much.

As others have said, RealVNC works very nicely.

More important, though, is your relationship with your friend. You have
allowed
him to take advantage of your good nature. Time for this to stop. My
billing
rate is $100/hr for commercial customers, sometimes less for people of
lesser
means. Geek Squad charges about the same. If you are providing good
quality
professional service, that's what your time is worth, too. Cost of parts
is
extra, and mark them up, too.
