I suggest charging for help (and don't charge a little, charge close to
what the "Geek Squad" at Best Buy charges). Your "friend" is taking
advantage of you and you're letting it happen; this is not in your best
interest. Charging a little money (less than what your time is worth)
is generally not a good idea as it will give the person the idea that
what you're doing isn't valuable. The only people I help for free are
family members and hot chicks.

After I helped him for those 10 hours without a thank you, and it
bothered me, I asked him (online via IM) if he could come over to my
apartment to help me clean. I said that I need my laundry done (about
10 loads) which should take some time but he could multi-task by
mopping my kitchen floor and cleaning my tub.

Heck, with the kind of yoga moves I had to make to put wires in
through this little hole in his computer desk, he can bend a little
and use some elbow grease.

(I use open but good quality (very sturdy) folding tables -- one 6'
and two 4' with plastic shelving units, so installing and uninstalling
things is very easy unlike his setup in which everything has to go
through this little circle hole in the back of the "alcove" where the
desktip goes).

He wasn't even willing to stop by and watch a video while I clean, to
have someone to keep me company (I have major depression which makes
it very hard for me to do anything, even the basics but this time of
year I usually come out of it).

Right now I said, but am not sticking to my guns as much as I should,
that I would charge him $30 / hour, but he needs to purchase the
support in increments of 10 hours. So, if he paid me $300 I would be
happy to help him, and I wouldn't watch the clock that closely.

The hard part is that I see him once in a while and he asks a question
-- at first I said I can answer as a consultant if you hire me on, but
recently I have answered some of them.

He's an OK guy, he just has a lot of blind spots, mostly related to
entitlement and lack of manners by saying the magic words "thank you"
and buying pizza for someone who spent a lot of time at his apartment.

I helped one of his friends for $200 -- his laptop had crashed and he
didn't know how to get it working again so I did a clean install for
him.
