We have a bunch of Dells in our office and one of the laptops needs to be
re-formatted and the OS (XP) be put back on it. Unfortunately when we
went to look for the installation disk we found all of them for all the
computers just thrown in a box! They all say for installation on a new
Dell PC. Non of them were ever ear marked to a specific machine. So
what do we do...can we use any one of those disks? If that disk is
already on another computer (highly likely) isn't that illegal? Should
we call Dell and ask them for a new disk? This laptop is about 3 years
old. Would they even do that? And even if the installation would go
through, since that serial number is probably on another of our machines,
won't that cause a problem in windows update...I mean when it sees the
same serial number? Please help.
Thank you,
dot
Nah, doesn't matter. As long as you're putting on the same version of the
OS (XP Pro on an XP Pro machine. XP Home on an XP Home machine), the CD
media is not important. The COA key sticker is on the machine.
