Re: Can't send movies to TV from S-video on Inspiron

Dave,

Can't comment on your particular card, but I've had both ATI and nVidia
cards with all three ports working. As you said, the TV has to be on and
connected at boot.

I can't comment on your setup specifically, but I can provide some of
my personal experiences with S-Vid. I use a desktop PC with an ATI
video card. The S-Video port is actually a 7-pin connector which
requires a cable adapter to convert to a standard S-video cable.

My computer was connected to a monitor, and I decided that I would also
hook it up to my TV. No go...the TV wasn't receiving a signal.
Checked the ATI dual monitor properties, but couldn't get anything to
work (not that I tried too hard).

Instead, I re-booted my PC and my TV received a signal (my VGA monitor
did not). So the vid card drivers seem to pick up on the fact that an
external device is connected. The video card I have supports VGA, DVI,
and S-Vid. I guess the DVI (digital) counts as one monitor and
VGA/S-Vid (analog) are the other monitor...I also guess that the
VGA/S-Vid signal cannot be shared between TV and monitor (due to the
different resolutions required?). I wonder...if I had a DVI-capable
monitor, could I use the S-Vid at the same time as the DVI?

Try re-booting your laptop with S-Video cable connected (and TV on), if
you haven't already. Alternately, try setting your laptop resolution
to something that might be useable by your TV.

The S-video output has no signal on my Dell Inspiron 4000 other than
the desktop. How do I get the S-video port to send something Windows
Media Player is playing to a TV?

The computer is a hand-me-down that I am trying to set up to play on a
big TV.

Is there some sort of additional driver, or set up, or reconfiguration,
or port enabling or something that must be done to send a video signal
to the S-video output on the Dell?

At first I had no video at all at the S-video port. Then I downloaded
the ATI driver from the Dell website. That improved the situation
somewhat. Now at least the display properties shows two monitors, and
if i check the "extend my desktop to this monitor" box, the desktop
from the notebook actually shows on the TV.

The "Use this device as the primary monitor" box is grayed out, though.
How do I activate this box?

Playing a movie in WMP doesn't send anything to the TV. I only get the
desktop. Kinda boring.

So, the S-video port is working and sending a signal to the TV. How do
I tell Inspiron to send more than just the desktop to the TV?
