I configured a system (XPS 600) and stored it in my cart four days
ago only to have it come up invalid twice since then. The first
time a message that popped up indicating it was only good for home &
home office users, which I am. So I built it up again, I found it
only offered a 2-yr minumum warranty which explained the extra $100.
So I started with a cheaper system that offered the 1-yr warranty
and built it back up thus removing the extra $100. Today, I find the
same error message regarding it must be for a home user and the item
is declared invalid. I build it back up only to find the CPU
upgrade I chose is now $100 more expensive. First, I don't
understand why Dell thinks I'm not a home user, I log on using the
account I've had for about 5 years which I used to buy 4 systems
over than time. Second, are CPU prices that volatile (i.e. Pentium
955 EE going up) or is this typical when one "thinks about it" for
several days.

I think it's typical. If I put something in my cart it's usually
there just to see how much it costs. Then I can compare various
configs, and choose which or whether to buy.

I assume that anything in my cart will be invalid if I leave it there
for any amount of time.

As far as home / business user, I am a business user who also
purchases for my home. So, it seems like they need a "customer_role"
field in their databases and systems, or should assign two different
customer numbers, but that can result in inconsistent data and would
require separate logins, etc.

Journey

Normally I would have expected it to only last a short while too except when
I put it in the cart it said (each time) it keeps it there for 30 days. I
checked Pricewatch which provides indicators when CPUs go up or down and I
didn't see that the Pentium 955 EE went up or down. Oh well, not much I can
do anyway.
