Actually I see 3 main issues with trying to "clone" an OS on one PC to
another much newer, PC:
1. It almost never works because of the vast hardware differences
between
PCs, even those close in age, let alone one that came with XP and
another
that had a 6-7 years older OS.
Are you guessing or know this for a fact?
It's worth a try, maybe everything is not impossible.......
2. The newer PC very likely has hardware for which there are no
drivers
in
the older OS. Even trying to do a fresh normal install of 98SE on the
newer
Dell likely would be unsatisfactory.
Good possibility, hence is why I'm asking if it will work and has
anyone
tried it on this particular system.......
(snip)
Truth is, my man, I've not seen any regularity of either Win98 install or
cloning posts since the 45XX or 46XX era of Dimension machines. Even
then
using Win98 was far from ideal, since MS had dropped any support for
Win98
and any drivers for the (then) current hardware were many times meant for
WinMe.
WindowsME hasn't been installed OEM on a Dell since the Dimension
2300/4300/8200 days some three to four years ago. The Intel 915V chipset
in
the Dim3100 obviously hadn't been designed yet, so the chances of any
drivers being developed for it are exactly nil.
I think Tom's point is correct; you're either going to have to leave it
on
the old machine or clone the drive to a late PIII or early, early P4
system
if you're after better performance and compatibility witn Win98.
Stew
Much more perspective that I didn't think of or researched......Of
course I'm sure you are 100% correct. Just goes ta show ya how
impulsivly people buy stuff & than hand it to ya and say "figger" it
out..........Geeeeez, never again.
