Dell Dimension XPS Boot Time Length

I have a Dell Dimension P2 D233, which has served faithfully as my local
Linux server for several years. I recently replaced it with something much
faster and am preparing to find it a new home. After reformatting the hard
drive and installing a fresh copy of Win98se, the system now hangs for a
couple of minutes while searching for the hard drive and optical (CD-ROM)
drive. It never previously did this when Linux was installed. (Insert
"Windoze sux" joke here.)

I checked the BIOS and it correctly identifies all of the components.
Quickboot is enabled. The only difference in configuration is that the
system previously had a second hard drive, which I removed before installing
Win98se. The currently solitary hard drive correctly appears has device 0 at
boot. I also tried changing the device boot order, but it made no
difference.

All the boot messages up to "Mouse initialized" appear with 5 seconds after
the Dell logo appears.

The system DOES eventually boot to Windows after the aforemention lengthy
delay and functions normally from then on.

Has anyone experienced this? Any suggestions?

Thanks!
