Re: Where to get second processor?

Interesting.. You call Norton a "bloaty pig" and recommend getting rid of it
to resolve CPU problem. Yet you then say how you are running "Norton
Corporate" yet your CPU load is less than 3%..

We run SAV CE 10 on multiple servers with no problems at all..............

i assume the latest version of norton, which is a complete bloaty pig.
i'm not sure extra proc will help that. you're wasting your money.

i have 2 servers running win2k3, one is a xeon 3.4 and the other a sc420
3.6 P4 and my cpu never spikes like you're describing. i am using norton
corproate ed on both. sql server, sqlbase, and a host of other apps with
25 users. right now as i look at both servers, the processor
utilitization has been steady at 0 - 3% which is the monitoring utility.

i find that the norton lataest programs are not lean enough!!
i would get rid of them before i get the 2nd processor.

It is mostly norton av and norton antispam that are spiking on a regular
basis. We run Exchange 2003 SP2, Windows 2003 SP1 with all the patches
for everything.

We have 2 GIGs of RAM and 300 GIGs of storage, 150 GIG free.

i dont know costs, but make sure when you compare prices, compare apples
to apples.
you need to get the processor, heat sink with clips and VRM.
these may come as a kit. some make try and sell them separate depending
on the part no you are using for quotes.

i would buy from dell unless their prices are way too high.
but you want to make sure your poweredge warranty is not voided by
putting in parts not from dell.

also, what makes you think a 2nd processor is going to help you?
just because you gets spikes in your usage?? that could be spyware or
malware causing that.
what OS are you running?, what size and type hard drives? and what kind
of an operation are you running that you need better performance?

i don't believe you will benefit from the 2nd processor.

i find it is cheaper to buy a dual processor server on sale, and perhaps
sell the old one or use it some other way!!

I have a poweredge 2600 server with a 3 GHz 2MB HT Xeon processor. The
CPU utilization tends to go up significantly on a regular basis. The 3
GHz 2MB HT Xeon processors seem reasonably priced on pricewatch but
usually about double the price on Dell's web site - any suggestion??
