Re: Returning Dell Products

dell certainly used to be more liberal about returns then they are these
days but still are a stand up company when the return is because of an error
made they made. for instance, the description of an item was ambiguous and
you did not receive what you expected, or a sales person did or did not
include something you asked for, etc. in these cases they will not pay for
the return shipping. i have not heard of anyone having to pay the 15%
restocking fee but i suspect it is reserved for use when they perceive they
are being taken advantage of. i think they should reserve the right to
charge such a fee until they inspect the condition of a return, but it is
outrageous that they would charge such a thing even if a person just
returned a computer because they didn't like it, after all we don't get to
touch or see the machine prior to purchase. seems like that is the price
they have to pay since they don't have brick and mortar stores. and as far
as i know the return period on new computers is only three weeks from the
ship date, 30 days on server products. what you might find interesting is
that should you call to return a computer they will often counter with an
offer to refund you some money instead, depending on the purchase price of
the system of course... but they both want you to be happy and know that
they will lose even more money if you actually did return the system.

Hi all,

I read here that some of you have returned your computer to Dell for one
reason or another. I read Dell's return policy for both U.S. and Canada
(where I live) and both are same in a least the following respects:
- Customer is responsible for return shipping charges and cost of
insurance
to cover loss, damage etc.
- Must be returned within 30 days in order to get a refund
- Dell May charge a 15% restocking fee on items returned.

For those who have returned their computers, have you had to pay this
restocking fee? That can be a significant amount of money.

I compared Dell's return policy to that of Staples and Future Shop. (Not
sure if these big box stores sell in the U.S.). Both these stores have
have
a 30-day return policy except for computers which are limited to 14 days.
The big item for me is there is no mention in their fine print about a
restocking charge. And of course there's no shipping or insurance charges
since you take the item back to your local store.

Any comments about buying Dell vs other brands to avoid potential
restocking
fees?

Clark
