First of all, why is the windowsXP OS even listed in the menu if it is
not supported?
It's always lists, even for a 486.
They call their Monitor-drivers for Display Adapters
(How can a Display/Monitor be an Adapter?).
When I choose Windows XP as the OS for this machine (using the service tag),
the title of that group is Display Devices. Can you provide a screen shot
where it was Adapters? Display Devices seems pretty clear
How am I supposed to know this unit didn't come with WinXP
pre-installed?
Because the machine was manufactured on January 5, 2000, prior to the
release of Windows XP. That's probably your biggest clue.
There is no 'Designed for windows....' sticker on the
unit, it has windowsXP installed. It runs just fine.
Fine is relative. If you, or your customer, are happy, that's great, but
investing $200 for a legal copy of XP for a machine of this age seems silly.
The point is also not if it's possible to find a driver on some other
site (even though I do appreciate the link you found), the point is
that the dell site is badly organized.
Actually, as I suggested, it is the Windows 2000 driver that I found. Had
you even tried to use that driver, which was easily available on the Dell
site? You are aware that XP supports many 2000 drivers, aren't you?
Why do they have a whole bunch of drivers for WinXP for this model for
other devices and not for the video-adapter? If it's unsupported then
why don't they have a 'Video adapter' section with an entry next to it
saying 'unsupported'.?
Because they expect the service technicians to have enough sense to figure
it out without having their hands held.
Secondly, Why shouldn't WindowsXP be supported?
Because the machine is 6 years old.
Why don't dell make
drivers for older models when a new OS comes out?
Show me a business model where that is profitable for Dell or any other
vendor. Would you pay more for every machine to ensure that drivers would
be available in the future? How much more? 10% 50%?
Does this mean that
if I buy a DELL laptop today win windowsXP that there wont be drivers
for Vista? (unless offcourse Vista supports XP drivers).
Quite possibly true. Vista is going to require significant horsepower,
particularly in a graphics card. Many of the current entry level laptops
and desktops will not support Vista. But they're cheap!
There is
nothing wrong with running XP on this unit. FYI, XP can run on 64MB
memory, if this one has 128 its fine.
64MB XP? Makes me laugh. 256MB can stumble along. 128MB can barely boot.
I guess my time is more valuable than your client's.
I've been installing XP on new
noname desktops with 128MB in the past plenty of times.
I am sorry for your customers that they do not realize what their machines
are capable of.
When XP came
out, the norm was 128MB and 256MB was something nice to have. 6GB is
likewise *plenty* of space. There is no problem installing XP on a 2GB
harddrive.
2GB. With no actual applications?
Thirdly, So what if it shipped with windows95? I don't care if it
shipped with DOS 3.2 :-) or Linux for that matter, It's specs are just
fine for running XP so why not? And nothing is wrong with 366Mhz. Most
people dont use 10% of the processing power they have available 90% of
the time. The bottleneck in the system is usually the harddrive (which
hasnt improved in speed as much as processors have) or other devices.
Probably true, but 366 is just too slow. You would better serve your
customer by installing Windows 98 or even Windows 2000. They would get much
more out of their machine.
