What are you referring to when you talk about build quality?

I thought the 810 was more rugged/robust. No?

Did you consider the Inspiron E1505 or 6400?

Yes, I though about it but chose the Latitude.

Thanks, Jim

Those are pretty nice
machines too, although they don't have the modular drive.

I don't think the 810 is more rugged / robust. It's just heavier.
When I get a laptop, I expect it to be portable without giving me a
backache. However there are some people whose needs for portability
are to move it from the den / office to the lazy-boy recliner in the
living room. That's about as far as I'd go with an 810.

I'm not planning on carrying it. Just moving it between places.

I think that "build quality" and the 810 being "more rugged" are just
illusions and have no basis in reality.

OK.

I would certainly prefer a desktop over a 810 which I would never
carry, that's just my opinion and experience with having laptops of
various sizes over the last 10 years or more.

I have a desktop. If it could do what I want, I'd have ordered a
desktop.

A big question is:

Why are you thinking about how rugged it is if you don't even intend
to use it portably?

Of course I intend to use it portably.
If I had no such intention Iwould have gotten a desktop.

My D505 went back and forth to school for over a year and there were
no problems.

If you really want a quality portable and rugged laptop, I would
recommend the IBM Thinkpad T43 (maybe it's the T60 now, not sure).

OK. I'll take a look at it for my next laptop.

Anyway, your wanting of a rugged laptop even though you don't plan on
using it as a laptop (as far as toting it from place to place) is
perplexing.

Not to me!

P.S. -- My first Toshiba Satellite had a 10" screen with 800 x 600
resolution. I remember the 12" screens demanding very high premiums.
Now it's sort of reversed somewhat, the smaller screen laptops can
cost more.

:-)
