Dell Inspirion 4000 PCMCIA slot not working

A neighbor has a Dell Inspirion 4000 laptop.
He has a WiFi card that he uses at home.
It seems that it only works when plugged into one of the PCMCIA slots,
it doesn't seem to work when plugged into the other slot.
I hope to take a look over the weekend.....
Any ideas why the card would only work in one of the slots,
other than the other slot just being non-working for some reason ?
Things to look for on a non-working PCMCIA slot ?
