Improvement in system performance, if one equates performance with speed, would

be the ticket... Ben Myers

The issue here is I have a live linux CD that tries to boot at
a resoloution higher than 4mb will allow, the unit will be used as a
wireless browser for safe surfing. the OS runs off the CD in ram without
any hard drive, and a usb key for preferences and download storage.
I had one spare PCI card that was good but it failed to work

What sources other than Dell can I find a 4mb video ram module,
and what specs should they meet?

I'd not bother to go that route; you'll get only a moderate increase in
performance for a lot of cost even if you can find a module (although
there are some on the UK eBay site at present...). If you have a PCI
slot free, get a cheap PCI graphics card with 64Mbytes of RAM or more
instead - these are comparatively cheap these days. Make sure however
you get one known to work on a GX1 and one that fits your case if you
have the SFF - browse the Dell Optiplex Video forums at
delltalk.us.dell.com for information.

Have a look at what graphics cards your particular Linux supports and
make sure that you get a card (a) known to work on the GX1 and (b)
supported by your Linux. It makes things a lot easier. From memory (a
long time ago) for example I used a PCI Radeon 7000 to get an earlier
Red Hat working because of the problem of resolution and graphics
support....
