I have never seen an external case for an SATA drive, but I suppose they
exist.
The real question is what sort of interface there is between the SATA
drive case
and the system. If it's USB 2.0, no problemo.
It really does not matter a lot how fast an external drive is. It is
limited by
the speed of the connection, which I am assuming is USB 2.0, slower than
any
drive transfer rate specs.
Do I have this right - The transfer rate for USB2 is speced at 480Mb/s
vs >150MB/s for SATA I. If I recall correctly MB/s is bytes (eight bits per
bytes)
per second and Mb/s per second is megabits per second
If that's the case then it really doesn't matter much what the interface is
for thre external HDD.
Drive transfer rate specs have long been a game of specsmanship for the
most
part. With current technology and with Window$ being a boat anchor for
system
performance, it is doubtful you would see lots and lots of difference at
the end
of the day between an SATA INTERNAL drive and an ATA133 drive.

Dimension 8200s were built without ISA slots, so the modem is a PCI
card.
As a
rule, modems are not built onto motherboards (except maybe for
PCCheaps,
er,
PCChips). In this country, as well as much of Western Europe, Japan
and
South
Korea, modems are becoming a thing of the past, so there is no reason
to
build
modem technology onto a motherboard. The modem in my computer is used
strictly
as a phone dialer by my contact management software.
When the 8200 boards were designed, Intel had not yet implemented a
policy of
providing on-board Ethernet on (virtually) all of its motherboard
designs.
You can put your USB 2.0-firewire card in the free PCI slot unless it
is
right
next to a HOT-running AGP video card with an overly large cooling fan.
Or pull
out the modem and install USB-firewire... Ben Myers

Look at the back of the machine and count the blank card slot
fillers.
From your description of only a video card (has it's own slot) and a
modem
(PCI slot), then you likely have (2) PCI slots open.
