ps. once you establish a connection with gotomypc to a computer in the
office you can then use remote desktop to connect to any of the other
machines in the office... so they don't actually have to install it on
the server. i haven't ever put it on a server and heasitate doing so
without asking gotomypc if they recommend it or not. if it is installed
on a users workstation then it provides the added benifit of that user
being able to work remotely when out of the office or when home sick...
so i suggest that you have them put it on a specific workstation and use
remote desktop to get to the server.

Chris -

I appreciate your input, even if you didn't notice it was me asking.
There are plenty of areas where I've got things to learn, and I have no
problem asking the group, because of you and a handful of others whose
opinions I happen to respect quite a bit (that happens after years of
reading you guys).

No, this is a "server-only" one-host situation. They don't need access to
the clients, just the one machine that is functioning as the database.

I'm a little pissed about this situation as I had a small but perfectly
functioning network for these guys with room for wireless expansion.
Somewhere somehow, a "management consultant" was called in (to increase
overall office efficiency) and now two additional systems have been added
(unneeded, including replacing the former host) along with what appears to
be a pair of stacked routers that replaced the DI 524 :) So, in effect,
this isn't *my* damned network or problem anymore.

Apparently, my hardware or my remote access solutions just are
sophisticated or sexy enough for someone in the food chain, and that's
cool. But whomever is shoving this Symantec solution down these folks
throats ought to have enough stones to set it up for them too.(g)

Whomever installed the new hardware and software needs to do their job and
set up the remote access as well.

Am I being pissy or am I making sense?

heh

that all makes sense. i think you should simply tell them that you would
not only not recommend a solution that involves pcanywhere but you feel so
strongly against it that you have no interest in assisting them in setting
it up as you would not want to be party to implementing what is after all a
disservice. the politics around the issue are not your problem so don't let
it become one. if they want the pcanywhere solution (which by the way was
an excellent low cost approach for many years, many years ago - well that is
with vpn) then wish them the best with it but don't get involved. what i
find most striking is when someone asks and pays for advice and then don't
take it. and yet despite them not listening to you they still want you to
implement something else... it just doesn't make sense. my response to
that sort of proposition is a simple no thank you. i can't be responsible
for something that i know isn't either smart, cost effective, or low
maintenance. they will ultimately be disappointed and you will never hear
the end of it. best of luck sorting this out.

ps. i did not mean to imply that you should hesitate asking the group
anything, anytime. this is how we all learn. and i have certainly learned
plenty from this group which i appreciate it immensely. i try to give back
where i can and admire you and the others that have been offering helpful
and reliable advice for so many years. so thank you and the other regulars
for that. kind regards,

.
