Re: Experienced users of Symantec PC Anywhere....need some help

'clayware' should read 'pcanywhere.'
'anywhere is nice,' should read 'vnc is nice,'

pcanywhere over the web is not at all secure unless you use a vpn
connection. and even then is it awfully slow compared to alternatives.

for pcanywhere to work reasonably well you first need a recent version
that is compatible with your operating system. you need a connection,
which can be a modem that the remote computer can call, or some internet
connection. the internet connection should have a fixed ip address so that
the remote person can find your computer (you could alternatively use a
dynamic ip address at the host computer if you employ a service that
constantly updates changes to a third party like no.ip.com). you need a
vpn connection between the host machine and the remote machine. these
networks need to have different ip ranges. you need to open port 5631 tcp
and 5632 udp.

much simpler would be to pay about $15/mo for gotomypc.com which can be
installed on the host computer. this provides a fast remote connection
that does not require fix ip addressing or any vpn software at the
remote... it simply works with any remote computer connected to the
internet using windows internet explorer. it will take you longer to
enter your credit card information and address than it will to download
and install the software.

a free alternative is logmein.com. but the free edition of logmein.com is
slower than gotomypc (though probably faster than clayware set up
correctly) and it does not provide file transfer services.

anywhere is nice, and it is fast, but it is not secure, and is essentially
as complicated as the pcanywhere description described above to make
secure.

the best small business solution for remote access is windows small
business server which has a remote web workplace feature built into it.

let us know what you do.

Peeps -

I need help from anyone who's actually configured PC Anywhere and gotten
it to work consistently, securely and in a stable manner.

I have someone who's insisting that I help with the install/setup of PC
Anywhere in a very small office. The remote connection abilities are to
allow a consultant to access the office "server" to monitor day-to-day
office scheduling, revenues, etc.

The target host/network is:

- A P4 machine (hardware is fine) running WinXP Home behind a DLink DI
524 wireless router utilizing a DSL 384k connection. Two other systems in
the small office are networked and internet enabled via the router.

------------

In scanning, searching and reading - I find conflicting or confusing
information as to how I will need to configure this to work.

-I have the impression that we'll need a static IP. True or No?

-The "Help" files within PC Anywhere seem to suggest that for DSL or
Cable that a VPN needs to be utilized. True or No?

- I suspect that I will need to re-configure the router settings and
possibly forward some ports. True or No?

Lastly, what is the simplest most cost-efficient manner in which to
provide these folks with remote access? (The consultant shoved the
software down their throats and billed them for it.)

-PC Anywhere

- WinXP remote access

- GoToMyPC

I need some firsthand experienced comments if anyone out there has pulled
this off. My experience with this particular product is squat.

Thanks in advance.........

Stew
