are you sure you ruled out spyware related issues?
they are quite tricky and could give false results.
did you ever boot up into safe mode to see if your results are different?
show shutdown could be caused by faulty hard drive interrupts or spyware getting in the way.
i wish you didnt get a maxtor drive, which are known to be terrible.
you can easily get a nice seagate with a 5 yr warranty for dirt cheap at buy.com, right now i see a 250gb pata drive with 5 yr warranty for $70 after $40 rebate. but that's still not your problem i dont think.
i would certainly change the cable by now.
where are you at? if you are local to NY, i can help you here.

I bought a new Hard Disk today. It is a Maxtor 300GB 6L300R0. I.
installed it and It did not show up in the BIOS, either when jumpered
to CSEL or Slave. Then I reinstalled it again (with jumper set to
CSEL) and to my surprise, the BIOS identified that a disk was found!
This is what it saw:
Primary Drive 0: ........... Hard Drive <my 80GB disk with jumper set
to "CSEL">
Primary Drive 1: ........... Hard drive <my new 300GB disk with jumper
set to "Slave">
However, when I looked at the details of the primary drive it showed
problems. This is what I saw :
Model : *a*t*r 6******
driver type AUTO
capacity 1055MB
I write * to indicate that there were some strange characters there
(e.g. a square, a note, etc)
I reinstalled the 120GB drive also and it was recognized in primary
drive 1 in a similar way as the 300GB maxtor drive: model w*******,
capacity 1055MB. Then I re-installed the 300GB drive and this time it
did not show up ("Unknown device").
Jay, I had the same conclusion as you (bad jumper on the 120GB, or bad
HD firmware). But now these tests shows the Harddisks as OK.
Something else is causing the problem. I have run the NVRAM clearing
procedure today (thanks for the instructions!). I also updated the
BIOS to the latest version A09. However, these actions did not solve
the problem.
As for the age of my Dell Dimension, I bought it in 2002.
Maybe the next step is to chane the IDE cable? Any other suggestions
on what could cause the above symptoms?
And oh, one more symptom (I do not know if it is related...) is that
winXP takes a long time to shut down now (4+ minutes)
