i just went thru this with dell on my cd/dvd +/- RW drive (sony). it
would not record onto a DVD, CD's were ok.
i called the dell 800 number, was connected to tech support, the phone
rang once before being answered by a tech in alabama. yes, he was in
alabama. walked me thru a few tests, downloaded an updated firmware
driver and when that didn't work he overnighted me a new drive.
problem solved. it couldn't have been easier, quicker or more
efficient. call dell.

I am ready to make a call to DELL tech support. Please give me
(WA2RSX) that 800 number !
Even tho I have the XPS Gen4 machine here, I always seem to get into
the wrong queue. And, what is supposed to be a faster queue turns out
to be much longer, because when I reach the wrong level tech, more
than a half hour has elapsed.
The second round (w/o Use this Drive with DLA tags removed) did not
make any difference here. In fact, the PHILLIPs recorder no longer
reads even a known good (installation) CDrom. So, after clearing our
blizzard tomorrow, I will attempt to get in touch with the proper
queue at DELL support via telephone.

I e-mailed my request for the replacement drive last weekend (Sat.),
complete with error codes and messages and different media types I used to
test during the diags.
I also requested parts only (system had onsite warranty). Replacement drive
arrived Tuesday morning.
Here's the e-mail contact (to request parts) link if you bought through the
small business department:
https://support.dell.com/support/supportrequests/create.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&request=true&s=bsd
.....or the home department:
https://support.dell.com/support/supportrequests/create.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&request=true&s=dhs
Others here recommended this route versus the phone, and I took the advice.
It works. I received confirmation of replacement within 24 hours.
