again, i use a multi-layered approach.
i have spyware blaster (free)
<http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html> running in the
background. this keeps most spyware pests from the pc.
but in case it doesn't i also have counter-spy ($, sunbelt software)
running and scanning in real-time
<http://www.sunbelt-software.com/CounterSpy.cfm>. i experimented with
MS anti-spyware, which looks and acts like counter-spy, but found that
counter-spy did a better job in real time mode.
every other week i scan my pc with the following AS tools:
- ad-aware se personal (free, lavasoft)
<http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/>
- pest patrol ($) <http://www.pestpatrol.com/>
- spy-bot search and destroy (free) <http://www.safer-networking.org/>
i also use the ads-gone popup killer ($) <http://www.adsgone.com/>.
its my opinion that this does a better job of blocking unwanted pop
ups than the free MS or google tools.
finally, i use a start page guard to keep my start/home page from
being hijacked and something called 'spoofstick' which helps detect
spoofed or faked websites.
start page guard: (free)
<http://www.snapfiles.com/get/startpageguard.html>
spoofstick (free)
<http://www.spoofstick.com/>
spoofstick
there are a lot of fine AS tools out there, DG. these are ones that i
have found do the job for me.
