i don't believe that any single AV program will catch 100% of the
viruses 100% of the time. a layered approach is a much better
defensive strategy. my layered defense consists of an AV program,
software firewall (not XP's firewall), real time spyware blocking,
real time spyware scanning (for those pests that get by the blocker),
periodically updating the AV and anti-spyware definition files,
stripping HTML off of most e-mail, not opening unexpected attachments
and a spam filter. i scan our pc twice a month for spyware using 3
different AS programs. i scan the entire pc each evening for viruses
(automated process). our e-mail client is outlook 2000.

in addition we use different e-mail addresses for different things.
our ISP's address is used only for close friends and family. it is
whitelisted which means if your e-mail address is not in the address
book the mail never makes it to my pc. our yahoo address is used for
on-line activities such as shopping and e-newsletters, lists, etc.
yahoo does a very good job of catching most spam at their server end.
we have a google account for business (monthly bills, etc) purposes.
i've yet to receive a piece of spam via my google account.

some think this is overkill while others tell me i haven't gone far
enough. YMMV but this approach seems to be working for me.
