My problem was the lag ZA was causing in my system as a whole (irrespective
of the transfer speed). There is no doubt it was the problem. And it's well
documented elsewhere. If anyone is having these problems and are suspect of
ZA I really recommend uninstalling it to see. You can always rollback if
not.
