The problem Dell is running XP Home SP1. The machine will not boot to
Windows in Safe Mode. We get the same error regarding the registry.

Kevin,
What version of XP Home do you have on the Dim2400?
I believe that model shipped with XP SP2. Or if you had upgraded to XP SP2,
my understanding is that you cannot do a repair installation with a XP SP1
CD to a XP SP2 PC. You will need to create a "new" CD, with SP2 slipstreamed
to the original XP SP1.
Have you tried restarting the PC in "Safe Mode", by pressing F8 during
boot-up. Then resetting the restore point to a date before this problem
began. Reboot PC, and see if things are alright.

We can't get it to complete the repair installation. We get a "Unable to
continue installation" error and the install stops. Also, for some reason,
the installation is called an "upgrade installation". This is a Dell OEM
Windows installation disk of Windows XP Home Edition SP1.
