it sounds to me like your modem. either swap it out, or better yet, after you disconnect the first time and you cant get another connection, go to device manager, disable the modem, and reenable it. if this works, it points to the modem.

On a new XPS system, WinXP, Intel modem. On a dialup connection to my ISP, if I disconnect (myself, or a dropped call, for any reason) I cannot reconnect and get authenticated unless I reboot.
It is not my ISP because this problem only happens with this Dell XPS system.
I have tried Dellhelp with no joy. I have also gone through the pages and pages and pages of config boxes for the modem commands and cannot find a fix.
To recap, I can dial up fine the first time. After any type of disconnect, I cannot get authenticated at my ISP even though the modem dials out OK and connects to the ISP.
Any one else encounter this? Is it a common occurrance with Dell systems? Suggestions where the right command is located?
TIA.
Your dialup ISP is att.net, correct? Pardon my ignorance of that ISP, but :
1) do you have their (att.net) software installed, and
2) if that software is NOT required to setup the account, have you tried doing so via WinXP?
I'm suggesting that it might be a problem with the att software....
