Is this worthwhile:
I recently purchased an Inspiron 2200 system. Total cost was about $720.
This included a 1-yr. warranty (did not include on-site).
Through various Dell deals, I can now upgrade this to a 3-year warranty, which includes on-site service, for only $80. more (net price after a coupon code and $75. mail-in rebate)
I usually do NOT buy extended warranties as overall I consider them bad deals (at least for appliances).
However, from reading posts on this newsgroup, I believe many of you do recommend such warranties for notebooks.
Why is that?? I know desktops are more likely to crap out early within the first year. If all is well by that time, then all should be well for quite awhile. Is there something different about notebooks??
Finally, for the additional net cost of just $80, wouldn't it make sense to do the aforementioned upgrade (2 additional years and all 3 years include on-site service).

The reason for the extended warranty is for the parts that might need to be repaired and/or replaced. It is far more difficult replacing notebook parts than those for desktops, which are more generally available over-the-counter. The extended warranty at the price given insures that the laptop or notebook will work for at least 3 years and not be dead for lack of a had-to-obtain part. .
