Probably so little (if any at all) that you won't notice it. Use Performance Monitor to see how much memory you are actually using. I suspect that you aren't even close to running out... ever.....
If you ever get into high end graphics editing, like using Photoshop, you may start running into memory problems. I would strongly urge against it unless you can demonstrate that you are actually running out of memory....
I'm going to take a somewhat contrarian view here - when you buy a desktop you need to consider future requirements as well as your current needs, e.g., does anyone expect Vista to use significantly less memory than XP? Maybe less HDD space? I don't. <g>
When I configure a desktop I try to guestimate what I'll regret not buying 6 months later - I generally buy a bigger HDD & extra RAM than standard. The 8400 I bought 4 months ago came from Dell with 1 GB of memory & I added another GB. No regrets to date.
YMMV, of course. .
