I've been e-reading for several years (bought my first PDA, a Palm Zire,
on its release date - 2003?). I've upgraded my hardware a few times and
now use an Android phone with apps for both Kindle and eReader formatted
books. I love that I can carry dozens of books with me weightlessly, and
that I don't have to figure out what to with all those books I've read -
used to sell them at garage sales or donate them to the library by the
case.

I've got Kindle on my iPhone, but the reading area is just too tiny for me to be comfortable. I know that's not the case for a lot of people, but my eyes aren't what they used to be and carrying my Kindle is just so easy... Besides, I'd run the phone battery down in a heartbeat. (-:

The best source I've found for free ebooks is gutenberg.org. They have a
huge project converting books in the public domain (no copyright issues)
into electronic format.

I've just downloaded a few books from there. Actually, I found them there and then looked for them on Amazon and got them from there - for free, of course! I have found I'm not terrible adept at converting formats so it's just much easier for me to have it come directly to my Kindle from Amazon.

I just introduced my 12yo DD to ereading this summer when her summer
required reading list included Jack London's "Call of the Wild,"
available free. Now she wants a Kindle for Christmas - or even better,
an Android tablet (yikes!) - but I'll try to make her settle for one of
my old Palms. :)

Let her use one of your old devices to make sure she really does use it. I can't think of a better gift for a child than the gift of reading. My son's interested was started when my sister gave him an Animorph book back when he was 7 or 8. For anyone with little kids the Animorphs are a great series that will capture the attention of any child, boy or girl. I've read the entire series and was as hooked at my son was = http://www.scholastic.com/animorphs/index.htm

I'm currently awaiting the release of Sarum by Rutherfurd for Kindle. That will be in a few days and I will very shortly after than get lost in the story.... (-:
