Dear AS3 family, I think you will understand what I mean when I say
that even though I have not smoked for more than 13 years, nothing in
the world woud cause me to light up a dreadful gasper, not even if I
were to warm my frozen fingers at the glow of its burning tip.  It is
so effing cold here in NYC.  Granted I am just a tad on the disabled
side so that I find trudging along the pavement in the face of a
frigid 30 mph wind a bit much, even for me, the onetime Amazon woman.
I know I can always come here and bitch about whatever is bothering
me, but brrrrr this is a biggie.  I can't even walk down to the corner
to the supermarket.  Fortunately, I have always been in the habit of
keeping my kitchen well stocked.  And hot soup will always help in
this kind of emergency.

Now I know that other places are having a rough winter as well.
California, where my sister Nancy, has been having drenching rains
along with winds.  She lives in the SF Bay Area and we had a really
long talk this morning.  She is very much interested in researching
our family history on Ancestry.com.  I am mildly interested in that,
myself, but it's way too complicated since there are so many
generations that came to America hundreds of years ago.

One thing she recently found was a photo of my Aunt Oma whom I
actually knew when I was a child.  I stayed on her farm after my
mother died.  The farm was just outside Oak Ridge, MO.  It was a long
train ride to St. Louis and then a bus ride to Cape Girardeau, where
Aunt Oma and Uncle Pearl Thompson picked us up and drove us to the
farm.  Traveling was no fun for me back then.  I suffered a lot from
motion sickness.

Uncle Pearl smoked a corncob pipe and chewed tobacco as well.

My sister told me this morning that she had found a photo of Aunt Oma
as a girl and she was very  pretty.

It seems as though years ago, everyone smoked or chewed tobacco as a
matter of course.

Just keeping in touch, and staying warm.

Love, Joyce

Hello Joyce! (& others)

As a MIchigander, I can sure relate to this post. I remember getting
quite upset when trying to flick my Bic when the windchills were in
the negatives here. Makes me shudder to remember that.

Happy New Year, AS3!!! Happy New Year, Joyce.
