Oh, my gawd!!!!  Spam sandwiches, yecchhh!  Way back when I was a
renegade teen who had run away from "home" I was sent to live with a
family in a very ritzy suburb of San Francisco.  (I was living in the
Bay Area at the time.)  They had another foster kid, much younger than
me and they had their own son who was about a year older.  So, we all
three got Spam sandwiches to take along for our school lunch.  I will
never forget the greasy ghastly taste of Spam.  I was accustomed to a
much more ethnic kind of lunch:  salami sandwiches on Italian bread
with lettuce and tomato, courtesy of Annunziata, la Strega.  The Spam
almost made me want to go back to the trainwreck that was the home I
left.

And yes, it was during that time that I began smoking.  The only
things I had with me when I left home was a half pack of Camels and
one thin dime.  In my distress, I guess I forgot to take along some
matches.

Mike, you know how fond I am of you, but please don't ever mention
Spam as a food again.  It's bad enough to prowl the supermarket aisles
and still see those dreaded blue cans on the shelves.  I swear, if I
starve to death, I will never take single bite of Spam.  And you are
forgiven; I know you had no idea the catastrophic effect it would have
on me.
