True Story...

Wife and I went out to eat Friday night at the Outback in Anderson SC.

We got there a little before the 4pm opening - and sat down anyway.. :)
We used to sit at the booths that surround the bar for a few reasons:
A: Smoking is allowed only at the bar area.
B: The booths are 1st come first serve - and I'm a good "booth snatcher".
C: You could have a *drink* while waiting to snatch a booth. :)

So despite being non-smokers, and despite the fact that the place was
emptly, and despite the fact that I didn't feel like a drink at 3:50 in the
afternoon, we still sat at the little bar booth out of familiarity. Why
not?

(For those that need to know these things, she ordered the medium size prime
rib, rare.
And I ordered 3 of the crabmeat stuffed baked shrimp apps with a side of
green beans. See a pattern here?)

So it's now about 4:30 some people are finally appearing. The food comes. I
smell something funny... "Hey? You smell that?" Of course, it turns out
the woman across the bar had just lit a cigarette - but it took me/us just a
*moment* to actually catch on to what was being smelled. It was quickly
voted that I would not attempt to steal her cigs... and my attention
returned to the next crabmeat stuffed shrimp morsel.

But looking back, I find the whole "what's that smell?" part rather funny...

Smoke was never much a problem during lunch in restaurants.
Early evening wasn't too bad either. It's later when the addicts
really get going.

Smoking here has been verboten since July of 2006. Greeters
no longer ask the insulting question. Of course, we want nonsmoking.

Your state is coming around soon, Clams. If not next year, then the next.
You have quite a few smaller towns with strong bans. When the rest
of the state realizes bans are not the end of the world, they'll
get around to it.

And that "smell" will be outside only.
