As human beings we have a tendency to remember the good things
and try to forget the bad.
The tobacco companies don't advertise the cigarette itself.
When you light it, it stinks. It puts out toxins, carcinogens,
and poisonous gases. The nicotine in it is highly addictive.
It causes cancer, emphysema, heart disease and a lot of
other deadly and debilitating diseases.
What they sell is the image. Friends, food, fun. The pretty
package with the emblem that looks like a medal for valor.
What we remember about smoking is what we associated with it.
We hated smoking even as we did it. And we did it only because
we were compelled to smoke in order to fix.
You nailed it perfectly. Romancing.
