Been following the other thread & wondering how I can say something
meaningfull & helpfull.
We lost my dad to Alzhiemers 5 years before we lost his body. He was a
shell of his former self
unable to walk, talk, feed himself, or interact meaningfully in any
way. Still we'd visit in the nursing home and
if we held his hand he would squeeze it sometimes as if someone was
there. I think Jef summed up what that's
like emotionally.
We took the position of supportive/ palliative care, antibiotics &
rehydration was as aggressive as we got
and finally one day it was over. I still wonder if we did him any
favors, but I believe we all wanted and tried to do what was best for
him.
It's just too bad he couldn't tell us what that was.
I guess I'm trying to say you're not alone, unfortunately it's an
experience/place many of us will share as we age.
Finally, believe wat everyone is telling you about taking care of
yourself, if you are fit & alert , you can
best advocate for your mother.
