Hello ASSSers: It's been a long time since I checked in, so long I've
spent hours trying to post this.....I found this group a few weeks
after I quit (using AOL's newsreader) and was hanging on by a strand
when I did a search for quit smoking help and came up with this
amazing group. I honestly don't think I would have made it without
the help, encouragement & support I gleaned from reading and posting
here so many years ago.
For those of you in the first days, weeks & months......you have my
sympathy. I know how hard it is in the beginning, the first couple
of years for me were a bitch. But it gets so much better as you get
some time under your belt. The best advice I can give you is stick
with it and log yourself some time without smoking. Your brain and
body will slowly adjust, all you need is more time. Don't give up
even when the day is over and life handed you more than your share of
BS because today, you did not smoke. .....keep going one day at a time
putting one foot in front of the other, it gets better and it keeps
getting better. It was a slow process for me. I used Joyce's sig
line as my mantra -----Be strong. Don't smoke. Not even one.
Especially not one.
I watched my father die two years ago from smoking related causes.
No man ever said on his deathbed * I wish I'd spent more time
smoking.
All the best to you on your non-smoking journeys----the view looking
back certainly makes this trip worth while.

Hey there, Susan! Great news and so gratifying to see that my mantra
was helpful to you. I still check into the newgroup every day. Just
to try to help out a bit and for the fine company of other quitters.
I really don't know anyone who smokes anymore. And I used to be so
common as I was growing up, working, raising a family. The dreadful
gaspers were there with me all the way. Until I found this newsgroup
and let it help me stay the course. This is the only time in my life
when I admitted that I could not do something (quit smoking) without
some kind of help. Otherwise I have always been very independent and
sometimes even foolish.
Just keep on keeping on, old buddy. You are a hero.
