We really are so lame when it comes to the number of people who'll make the
effort to speak a foreign language.
President Sarkozy told the Queen of England this summer "zees eez
magnifical". What more can is say ?

no really, it's amazing (c'est incroyable)
When you're foreign and in France, not speaking French
you get
a. treated like a cute but slightly backward toddler (if you're blond
like me)
b. given the silent treatment (if you're a blond dutch tall man)
c. thrown to the lions (and without so much as a bra, I tell you) for
tourist entertainment somewhere in the Provence, with tarte tatin for
desert.
But hey, you guys have a great language!
I'd stand up for it too! (Marseillaise sounding in the background)
What if we *all* spoke English all the time?
What you need to do with the frogs is *try* to speak their plus belle
langue as best you can, but act helpless and whine about their
meaningless gender distinctions, adjectival reversals and numerous
exceptions. This will cause them to reveal how much English they know.
Otherwise, they hide it.
Of course, they learned to speak French fluently as children. but you
never will unless you devote your entire life to it, so just apologize
profusely and they'll sympathize. Better to learn their cooking
techniques than the convolutions of their language.
