The police were here yesterday evening, and it was due to this fearful
cold weather!
I had just settled in my rocker recliner with the first glass of the
evening, and, regrettably, wishing I had a cigarette to go with it
when the doorbell went and a fist battered on the door. I was expecting
no callers at this hour, nearly five pm, and when I opened the door a
voice asked me if I was all right. I suppose I said I was, and he
said we had a 911 call from here.
"I never made - oh."
Sound of penny dropping.
What had happened was, about half an hour earlier, I'd pressed the key
on the phone that rings the number you last called. I thought I'd last
called a local bank computer that tells you the temperature and gives a
forecast for two days ahead.
But instead I got a female voice, and said Sorry wrong number and
hung up.
Now - this gets complicated here - the last call I had in fact made
was to another talking computer at my bank that gives you information
about your accounts, checks paid, etc. to access this, you have to give
your pin number and the account number among other things.
The 9 is the last number of the savings account, and I had then hit 1
twice: that tells the computer what you want.
I explained all this to the policeman and apologized, he was quite
pleasant about it and just asked for my second name for the records.
All this excitement cannot be good for someone of my years.....
