There´s no Netflix here. But with downloading still being legal in Holland
in theory I could just download them. <grin> And no, they don't dub here.
They subtitle everything here. So if I watch movies on TV I usually both
watch and read them. If I watch them on my computer I usually watch
them without subtitles. Language can't be translated one on one anyway.
If you translate an English page in Dutch you'll end up with about half a
page more text. That's prolly why my posts are long. It's not coz I am so
longwinded, it's coz my English is Dutch. <grin> Anyway, since there is
no 101 translation I might as well translate it to my own version. And yes,
I miss some of it some of the time. Especially when it's in UK English. But
I am OK with that. There are some English shows I just can't watch coz
I don't get the accents and miss over half the show. Believe me, there's
a big chance you would too. Them peoples talks weird I tell yaz.

More useless trivia? What I have noticed during scrabble is that our
languages have pretty much the same origins, we just use different parts
of it. When I play Cat or Anne I often feel like they ate a damned
dictionary coz they use words I never came across. At at the same time
I often use words with a French or Latin origin that they keep challenging.
Words that are pretty common in Holland. So thanks again for the compliment.
I know my English is OK, but I have people pointing out my English is
severely lacking all the time. And that's just typing, you've heard my
accent. <grin>

Dubbing? We used to do that for fun as kids, go around and play Clint
Eastwood in fake German. Never stops being funny. Hande hoch cowboy.

Dubbing is horrid. Subtitles aren't all that, but it's a good way to pick up
English for lazy bastards that never went to school. <grin> Nah, I am
positive it's a good way. I really am not kidding when I say I speak sitcom
English. Being on the subject of sitcoms, a crap show like Friends dubbed
in German might actually make it funnier. ;-)

Do you get your movies from Netflix, or is there a Dutch equivalent? Are they in English, or dubbed into Dutch? Of course, your English is so very good-- even down to the use of the colloquialisms, pop culture references and slang, that I imagine it's no great hardship for you to watch an English language film, but I'm curious. Do you have that option available?


I'll never forget how freaked out I was when I was a kid, and went to my first movie in Germany. It was some western, and in the opening scene, an Indian rides up on a horse, and stops to raise his hand in greeting to a cowboy.

I was fully expecting to hear a solemn "How!"-- the great, stock, cliché, grunted movie-Indian greeting.
Instead, this dubbed German voice comes out with "Wie gehts?"
