I too hated these people on BBC domestic radio who used to come on
and nag me about my smoking, and yes, it made me smoke more, just to
defy them!
I haven't become a "Thou shalt not smoke" ex-smoker, I just tell the few
smokers I meet that I used to smoke heavenly, very heavily for almost
fifty years and it nearly ruined my lungs, and let them draw their own
conclusions.
