Pleasant news, and I've got a little behind

Photos available at a modest price, sent to you in a plain brown rapper.

No, what I really meant is, I have accrued a lamentably large number
of unread messages in here over the last couple of days.

However I can now
report that my new window blinds have been installed
today; it took him from ten till four; they are of an ingenious design,
you push upwards using the little sticky-out bits on the bottom rail
and they concertina up and vanish inside a metal container fixed at the
top. Somehow, this takes almost no effort, they sort of go up as if
being pulled from above; some kind of clutch I gather. Pulling on the
sticky-out bits brings them
down, to stop at any position.
As I described in another earlier message, they have an outer and inner
skin, with a sort of honeycomb design between to provide improved
insulation.
I almost immediately noticed a difference: they were all fully lowered
and the room temperature in the living area quickly stabilized at 75.2 F even
after I switched off the central heating.
With the old roller blinds, (not all the windows were fitted , some
were bare) I was constantly fiddling with the a/c or heating control as
the indoor temperature alternatively climbed and dropped. I shall be
interested to see how my gas and electric bills are affected by this
increased insulation in coming months.
Up till today, the sun has been blazing in all day, sending the indoor
temperature up very high, but today it's been cloudy all day and some
rain even, and a chilly north wind, so I can't yet tell how good they
will do on sunny days.
Interestingly, the acoustics in the sun room have also changed - it
holds only one rocker recliner and a large proportion of the walls are
windows, the floor is a kind of hard plastic material that looks
exactly like wooden floorboards, there is a cathedral ceiling. Result
was, there was a distinctly echo-y property to anyone speaking in there,
and playing a radio or tape player in there was not satisfactory because of the
hollowness of the sound. I experimentally spoke in there this afternoon,
and my voice sounded almost as normal.
So despite the shocking high cost, I am well pleased.

Also today, some considerablybetter news than I'd expected about how I stand
financially- I at last received a report on the total current market
value of my holdings. true, I am down on the last figure I had, but by
far far less than I'd feared. Of course, only a certain proportion of
the whole is in the stock market, both domestic and foreign; the bulk is
in 2 annuities and an IRA.
I've suffered grievously high outgoings this year, some over that
ghastly Waterford retirement apartment place, and had dismal expectations of
these having chopped my grand total down disastrously, and of course
the market plunging at intervals these last few weeks, I thought, would
have done even more damage.

Finally, needless to say, I am still a committed non-smoker and as a
result no longer have that perpetual painful lung-tearing cough.

So, I am feeling quite pleased with life today, and only wish every
last one of you lot could also simultaneously report happy news, but life is
not like that.
