I attended a three-day course for fearful flyers. Yesterday we took a

In a way the whole flying problem reminded me of quitting smoking.

At first you think you could never quit (never fly).

Then you admit the possibility that you might just be able to quit (get
over
your fear of flying).

Then you educate yourself about how to quit and why to quit (educate
yourself about the security of flying, how to deal with your fears etc.)

Then you actually go through the difficult first weeks of not smoking (you
take yourself and your fear for an airplane ride or two or 12).

Eventually there comes a day when you look back astonished and say "I
really
used to be a smoker?" (I really used to be a fearful flyer?)

I haven't gotten to that last stage as a flyer yet, but I have gotten
there
as a smoker and it helps me to believe I just might make it as a flyer.!

all the best to you all,
Katie

I cannot even imagine being free of my fear of flying. I get
absolutely terrified and every time I have to fly I swear I will never
put myself through it again. Up to my late 20's I wasn't at all
afraid and now it just gets worse and worse. Now when I fly I always
have to advise my seat mate of my problem because the physical
manifestations could be taken for a heart attack (gasping, clutching
my chest or the air in front of me or the person next to me).
Congratulations on facing you fear and taking the class.
Sue
Two years, three months, four weeks, one day, 9 hours, 22 minutes and
20 seconds. 28128 cigarettes not smoked, saving $4,683.46. Life saved:
13 weeks, 6 days, 16 hours, 0 minutes.

I can really sympathize Sue. I don't want to do it again either, but
everyone tells me with practice you can really beat it. Meeting others with
the same phobia was great. They're so supportive, like the people here are.
I have taken many flights in my life but about 10 years ago I just quit. I
just didn't want to suffer any more. Now, I can see how imprisoned I am by
this fear. But if you don't want to, you don't have to. It's a choice.

I suppose you know the statistics? You have more of a chance of winning the
lottery than being in an airplane crash. I know, I know. Statistics don't
matter one bit when you're up there looking down while the plane is bouncing
over turbulence!

all the best,
Katie
