Becky offered this:
What do I do though when fear starts
setting in?
you know, fear of waking up without my cigs to start off, fear of going
through the workday without them. I have done it before and can do ita gain
but still there is that nagging little fear.
Try not to focus too far into the future. For example, when you get
up, just concentrate on getting through your coffee and shower (or
whatever you do when you get up) and don't worry about not smoking at
work. One of the things that kills quits is the thought that the quit
is FOREVER and you'll never be able to smoke again. The junkie part
of you starts crying and thinking about how much you're going to miss
smoking if you have to quit FOREVER.
You know, FOREVER is a very long time! Nobody is going to live
FOREVER and the prospect of not smoking for that long is truly scary
when you first quit (as I'm sure you're well aware). A much better
strategy is to focus on getting through the next shift at work. Or
the next couple of hours. Or the next few minutes. Whatever it
takes. There are so many cliches I could throw out on this thought,
but three come immediately to mind.
One day at a time
The urrge will pass whether you smoke or not.
Don't smoke. Not even one. Especially not one.
And remember, there is a reason something reaches the status of
"cliche" and it's usually because it's true!
Hugs,
Rob
