Re: Ahem, I have returned ... or something

Welcome back Ian.
this feeling of I have to quit because of doom isn't going to last long
,you might forget what you are feeling right now save all of your posts (
this one in paticular) to look back on. also find some happy things quitting
is helping with. I know day 6 is early on and you might not notice huge
benefits yet .
when they happen celebrate them (such as able to walk 1 flight of stairs or
don't get winded putting on your socks or your cough in the mornings are
gone) let the positive shine through.
stick with your NRT if it is working for you and if it isn't change to
something else, don't jump ship again Ok

Don't know if anyone remembers me - I tried to stop breathing smoke
about mid January and did go one week without. I used Chancix to kill
the need for nicotine but after three weeks I found I was suffering
black melancholy, insomnia and took myself off the Chancix. I was back
to my old self in three days or so, but alas, I was also consuming 40
cigarettes a day.
One benefit of the week off smoking was that I got rid of the bronchitis
I'd had for three months.
Well, just over a week my blood pressure went mad and on Sunday 30 last
month, It reached a memorable 191 over 102.
The emergency hospital people found no sign of damage however.
Then on Tuesday 1st, I was due to be at my GP at 11 but at 8:30 am I
wondered if I could really last that long. I felt awful -dizzy, unsteady,
slight headache, and extreme difficulty in breathing. A neighbor got me
to the doctor at nine thirty and he immediately put me on oxygen and I
had an injection of steroid for the chest.
But the oxygen level in the blood remained too low, and I went on to the
hospital. There, after waiting to be seen for an hour, the oxygen level
had risen to an acceptable 96. The doctor said he would expect a patient
with
emphysema to be around 90, so 96 is good.

"Are you still smoking?" he asked: he'd seen me before.
"Not any more.'
"Oh, when did you qui?"
"This morning."
That got a laugh.
Well, while at the GP that morning, I'd taken out my packet of twenty,
and dropped it in his wastepaper bin. "That's it man, no more for me."
I thought.
I felt I'd been given a Final Warning.
So, I'm n my sixth day and still desperately long for a smoke several
times a day. I found a thing nicotrol lying around, it's a kind of
plastic tube that comes apart to let you insert a little cartridge and
when you suck in, you get a nicotine fix but no smoke.
So there it is folks - I'm again giving the things up, not this time
because I was spending about 3500 dollars a year but to avoid again
reaching the lamentable state I was in on Tuesday last.
Chest and breathing are great now, not as when I was 19 I suppose but
then I'm not 19 I'm 69! Appetite is back with a rush and a general
improvement all round. The gP and the clinic nurse were clearly pleased
and surprised when I went back on Friday, walking unaided, breathing
much better, and blood pressure good.
Yesterday it dropped to an amazing 91 over 60! I may be able to drop
the bp medicine level before long.

I hope none of you have not gone through anything as ghastly in the last
couple of months since I left the group, md are all successfully
resisting the siren call of the cigarette!
Doesn't seem to be as many contributing as I remember from last time. I
wonder if this signifies a number of failures like the one Ihad2 months
ago. But maybe it's just a quiet day for messages.
