Sue I am so proud of your daughter for all the hard work she has put into
growing up and getting her life on track.Im so happy for you.
Umm. I dont suppose she would want to have a word with a very unmotivated 17
year old boy?my son is driving me nuts. but reading your daughters story
gives me hope that my son will grow up one day and become more responsible

I, along with many of the rest of you, have shared the bad and the
good. Tonight I have something good to share - boy am I a proud mom!!
When daughter #3 graduated from high school she went to UCLA majoring
in aerospace engineering. Delivering her to the school in the fall of
1996 was probably one of the proudest days of my life. Both my
parents went there. For those of you who are not USians, UCLA is one
of the best public universities in the country (well, that's my
opinion anyway). <sigh> Things didn't go well for her. The
population of the school was larger than the population of our town.
She just didn't adjust in many ways. She's the one I mentioned some
while back who broke her collar bone and didn't get adequate medical
care for it at the time so that was another problem she had. She
lasted 4 quarters and came home. She thought she had just dropped out
but, since she failed to file some sort of papers, they actually threw
her out. Also, hanging over her head was a drunk driving, hit and run
she got during the summer after high school (she hit a parked truck).
So, she had DUI classes to attend and a fine to pay which she pretty
much ignored. She moved to Chico, CA and made a life for herself. Had
a baby she gave up for adoption in 1999. About 4 years ago she
decided it was time to grow up so she started by paying her fine,
taking the DUI class and paying off her old student loan that she had
also been ignoring for years. She commenced her battle to take on
UCLA for round 2. My daughter is a very determined child. She went
back to school - to community college - for two semesters and then
transferred to Chico State for one semester. She took lots of math -
calculus type stuff - plus genetic biology or somesuch, sociology,
ancient history and so forth. 3 semesters of all A's. All the while
she was in constant touch with various people at UCLA trying her
damndest to get back in. She was so sure of success that she recently
gave 30 days notice to her job and her landlord. She was trying for
readmittance to the school of engineering but was finally told "no"
yesterday. So, she got on the phone to the admissions office this
morning to try to get in as undeclared student into the college of
arts and letters. Guess what? She's
in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She starts at the end of March. I
am so proud. Mostly proud of her determination to clean up her act
and work so hard. Proud of the fact that I was the first one she
called to give the good news. She had given me a coffee mug when she
was a student there before that says simply "UCLA MOM". I put it away
when she left the school 10 years ago. I got it out of the cupboard
today.
I have no doubt that Round two will go to Amy.
If you're still with me, thanks.
Sue
