Re: OT - College Station, Texas - ??

Well, Leslie, it seems you have turned up a lot of info about College
Station and Texas and in the process have given several of us in the
group an opportunity to talk about our forebearers. I think the big
thing about all non-Native Americans is that we all are from
'somewhere else' regardless of how long we have lived in a particular
area. I grew up outside of Cincinnati and was fairly familiar with
folk from 'down home' which meant the hills of Kentucky and
Tennessee. While Cincinnati was in the Union during the Civil war,
like NYC it was much more of a Southern City than a Yankee one. NYC
actually thought of leaving the Union and becoming it's own nation so
that they could continue trade with the South during the war. These
days I see the US torn between the Coasts and the heartland as the
politics and cultures are growing increasingly different. I remember
seeing a map of Greater Canada if all of the states that supported
Gore joined up with them.

I guess my point is that while there are efforts to build big bridges
and cultures [the US, EU, Canada for example] there is also a push to
have self determination [The Czeck Republic and Slovakia come to
mind]. While we are increasingly getting a global perspective on
stuff we still want our own niche of territory to be our very own.
